To mark the bicentenary of Gustave Courbet, who was born in Ornans in 1819 and died at La Tour-de-Peilz in 1877, the Musée Jenisch Vevey presents Courbet the Draughtsman. The French artist’s paintings are widely known and extensively documented, but his drawings have always been somewhat neglected. While critics may often have disregarded his output as a draughtsman, he actually produced graphic works of high quality and was far more involved in the form than is generally supposed. This exhibition sets out to highlight and re-evaluate this under-appreciated area of his work.
