Born in Geneva, Albert Chavaz (1907 – 1990) was a major figure in twentieth-century art in French-speaking Switzerland. After discovering the canton of Valais in 1934, he spent the rest of his life there, setting up a studio in Savièse in 1940. A renowned artist, he primarily painted landscapes, female figures and still lifes.
In the early 1970s, Chavaz met partners at the Atelier de Saint-Prex who introduced him to the techniques of aquatint and colour lithography. The exhibition presents a panorama of the artist’s engraved work, arranged thematically. Thanks to a recent donation from the Fondation Albert Chavaz that rounds out the collections of the Fondation William Cuendet & Atelier de Saint-Prex, the exhibition focuses on the creative process behind the works.
