Born in Geneva, Albert Chavaz (1907 – 1990) was a major figure in twentieth-century art in French-speaking Switzerland. After discovering the canton of Valais in 1934, he spent the rest of his life there, setting up a studio in Savièse in 1940. A renowned artist, he primarily painted landscapes, female figures and still lifes.

In the early 1970s, Chavaz met partners at the Atelier de Saint-Prex who introduced him to the techniques of aquatint and colour lithography. The exhibition presents a panorama of the artist’s engraved work, arranged thematically. Thanks to a recent donation from the Fondation Albert Chavaz that rounds out the collections of the Fondation William Cuendet & Atelier de Saint-Prex, the exhibition focuses on the creative process behind the works.

Publication

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue that follows in the footsteps of the catalogues co-published with La Dogana, devoted to Jean Lecoultre (2021) and Pietro Sarto (2022). The publication offers several perspectives on Albert Chavaz, with the main text written by art historian Louis Deltour. It paints a portrait of the artist, tracing his artistic career, his work and his aesthetic research. The exhibition’s curator, Julie Eggel, looked at Chavaz’s engraving work, from his first solo attempts with drypoint and linocut in the 1950s, to the aquatints and lithographs produced with members of the Atelier de Saint-Prex from the 1970s onwards. Finally, an interview with the artist’s children looks at their childhood memories of their artist father and the foundation they created in his name.
